The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Member of Parliament(MP) for the Manso Nkwanta constituency, a known illegal mining (galamsey) prone area, Hon. George Obeng Takyi has demanded of the government to be heard as it decides to fight galamsey in the country advising it to vary its methodology in the approach to halt the practice, m reports.

In a viral interview with Kwame Adinkrah on Kumasi-based Pure FM monitored by MyNewsGh.com, the MP indicated that the affected people in galamsey prone areas across the country were not represented in the recently ended consultative dialogue on galamsey as he personally was denied an opportunity to voice his view in a presentation form on how best the government can halt the practice without his constituents suffering.

He told Kwame Adinkrah that as much as he supports the government’s intended exercise, the approach they are seeking to adopt will disadvantage his constituents.

“We support the government’s action to fight illegal mining but we must not be disadvantaged in the process.

In the just-ended stakeholder dialogue on galamsey, Kwame the affected people in galamsey areas were not represented. I was even denied the opportunity to make a presentation. They can’t sit there and make decisions for us when we will be the ones to be at the receiving ends of the consequences of their decisions.

I speak for my people and our collective concern is that we should be involve in the policy process because our lands and properties are at stake. My people should be beneficiaries and not losers.”

“Our main issue is about the methodology of mining. Our forefathers who started this galamsey didn’t destroy the lands so why now?

A detailed research needs to be conducted to find out why currently the galamsey practice is destroying our lands but we seek to offer an alternative to government to adopt the same methodology by our forefathers that creates a small hole to take out the ore and not the current practice that we use heavy equipment to destroy our lands.

Also, government should adopt a timing approach in its quest to halt the galamsey problem by making the practice seasonal.

Kwame, this is why we demand to be heard. We should be involved and not sidelined because it is our lands and we must be beneficiaries.” He stated in the interview with Kwame Adinkrah on Pure FM.
